Cryptitis is defined as an inflammatory process in the anal crypts. Inflammation in this area is quite common.

What are the symptoms of cryptitis?

It is characterized by redness, swelling, and thickening of the tissues. If you have any of these symptoms, we strongly suggest you to consult your health care professional.

What are the mechanisms underlying cryptitis?

Trauma from hard, dry stools or irritation from diarrhea can occur in this area leading to cryptitis. The cause of cryptitis may also be due to an infection or an inflammatory process in the surrounding areas.

Fistulaea and abscesses can develop with untreated prolonged infection.(9,10)

Fistulae (uncommon condition): Tiny channel or tunnel that develops in the presence of inflammation and infection. Certain illnesses such as Crohn's disease can cause fistulas to develop. Channel usually runs from the rectum to an opening in the skin around the anus, where it can be seen as a hole.
